This year our Green Village will return situated within the Winter Gardens and Millenium Square which will demonstrate that Sheffield Food Festival is not just about being spoilt for choice with tantilising aromas from our delicious array of food and artisan traders, as well as, local and speciality beers and funky cocktails from numerous pop up bars.

Our Green Village has been a vital part of Sheffield Food Festival for 5 years, with numerous debates, demonstrations and educational activities to raise awareness of food waste and what we can be doing on a day-to-day basis to become more sustainable.

This year, our Green Village will be collaborating with Food Works who are a social enterprise that are the leading force in trying to change food waste in Sheffield. Formally known as the The Real Junk Food Project they began a pay-as-you-feel concept to Sheffield and was soon inundated with people and food businesses wanting to work together to reduce food waste across the city. Last year alone, Food Works saved 1 million meals worth of food from going to landfill, working with a team of almost 300 volunteers to make this food available to the people of Sheffield including projects such as; pay-as-you-feel supermarket, community café, dining events, catering business, green box scheme and schools projects.

“In 2020, Food Works are creating a movement for sustainable food in Sheffield. Their mission is for everyone to enjoy food that respects and nourishes the individual, the community and the natural environment. At the heart of this, Food Works are creating active ways for the people of Sheffield to build this fair food system together.”

At Sheffield Food Festival, Food Works are going to inspire, entertain and engage you with creative ways to use food that you otherwise might throw away. You can expect an exciting programme of cooking demonstrations, workshops and interactive talks. Peddle a delicious surplus fruit smoothie on their smoothie bike, have a taste of some homemade black banana bread, or come along and pickle your own cucumbers to take home. There will be plenty of activities for the whole family.
